Sing, sing a song

Author:
Harold Wonham

The choir was very busy before Christmas. In addition to contributing to the church services we visited two residential homes, Abbeyfield in East Street and Acacia lodge in Trinity Street. We have been to Abbyfield for a number of years now and as usual we sang items which we had specially prepared, interspersed with carols so that their residents could join in. It was our first visit to Acacia lodge where several of our members now live and we sang a selection of carols, some of which were requested by the residents. It was new outreach for us and one we hope to repeat. We were told that it was the first time they had welcomed carol singers for seven years and the first time ever with adult singers. On a personal note I would like to thank the choir for their hard work while I was substituting for Dennis, who was on holiday especially those who took solo parts ,you made my life very easy. Immediate Recall

Author:
E Dunning

The maker of all human beings (God) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart.
This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been technically termed “ Sub- sequential Internal Non- Morality,” more commonly known as S.I.N.
Some of the symptoms include:;
Loss of direction
Amnesia of origin
Lack of peace and joy
Selfish or violent behaviour
Depression or confusion
Fearfulness
Idolatry
Rebellion
The manufacturer, who is neither liable, nor at fault for this defect, is providing a factory-authorised repair service free of charge to correct the fault. The repair technician, JESUS, has most generously offered to bare the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no additional fee required.
The number to call for the repair service in all areas is P-R-A-Y-E-R.
Once connected please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download ATTONEMENT from the repair technican JESUS into the heart component.
No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, JESUS will replace it with
Love, Joy, Peace ,Patience ,Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,
Gentleness and Self-control.

Please see the operating manual, the B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth)

WARNING! Continuing to operate the human being unit without correction voids any manufacturer warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems too numerous to list and will result in the human unit being permanently impounded. For free emergency service, call on JESUS.
DANGER! The human being units not responding to this recall action will have to be scrapped. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter heaven so as to prevent contamination of the facility.
Thank you for your attention!
GOD
PS Please assist where possible by notifying others of this important recall notice. You may contact the Father at any time by Knee mail..

Do You Just Belong?

Author:
Ron Henderson

Are you an active member, the kind who would be missed,
or are you just content that your name is on the list>
Do you attend the functions and mingle with the crowd,
or do you stay at home and grumble long and loud?
Do you take an active part to help God’s work along,
or are you satisfied to be the kind that just belong?
Do you ever come along, or information seek,
or leave the work to just a few and talk about ‘the clique’’ ?
There’ s quite a programme scheduled, that means success is won
and it can be accomplished with the help of everyone!
So why not come along and help with hand and heart;
don’t just be a member, but take an active part.

Letter for January/February

Dear friends,

This month sees the induction of our new Minister the Rev Paul Bedford. Paul had hoped to have time to write this letter himself, but at the time of going to print, he and Susan are in the throws of moving. He has however asked us to say that he is very much looking forward to being with us soon and to working with us in the years ahead.
We too, no doubt, are looking forward to new times and new challenges. Undoubtedly some things will change and that can be both exciting and refreshing, but perhaps, at times, a little unnerving too .But we do not travel alone, for God is with us and is ‘ever the maker and keeper of our days’ as a hymn we sang recently told us.
Through out the time we have been looking for a new Minister, God has been by our sides, supporting, guiding and leading us into making the right choices, He has also been with Paul, leading him to us; together we, that’s all of us here at Fareham URC, Paul and God himself, have work to do. Exactly what that work will be we cannot know yet, but God knows and he will show us, all we need to do is to be ready and willing to let him.
The other day, just for a while, the water in the tidal creek outside my study window was unusually still. There was no wind and at that moment, no wildlife to disturb it. However, there was a small boy walking along the path with his mother and the little lad did what little lads do, he picked up a pebble and threw it into the water, This of course caused a splash and a circle of ever enlarging ripples emanating from the stone’s point of entryThe church is like that stone. We are here to cause ripples; ripples of love reaching further and further out into our local communities and beyond into the world around us; showing care, offering help and fulfilling needs, just as our Lord and Saviour would have done himself. I’m sure that with Paul’s help there will be new and wonderful
possibilities to explore. The Lord has placed us together and together we will go forward in his name.
As the hymn said,’ God is with us beyond our understanding;
God of our present , our past and future too’.
With that in mind the future looks very bright indeed.
Gill B.

Prayer for the Week

Journeying God, you beckon us to join you on the road of life.
In this New Year, you call us to come, to follow, to travel with you.
As the wise men brought gifts to the Christ child, help us to bring our gifts to Him.
The brought Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh – unusual yet significant gifts. Gifts for a king, a priest and for dark times.

Immanuel, God with us, we have no gold, no frankincense, no myrrh, but we bring you our worship, our prayers, our self denial, poor and pale as they are, knowing that you will not turn us away but will hold out you arms and welcome us.

We ask that you give courage to the cautious, strength to the weary, vision to the short sighted.
When we are unsure of where you are leading, and cannot chart our path or progress, give us trust and help us to never forget that you do know best and will encourage, enable and bless all who are willing to do their best for you and for your people.

Lord, the magi long ago looked for you in the wrong place, believing that you would be in a palace; but you were in a place where animals were stabled, laid in a feeding trough. Too often today people look for what they feel they need in the wrong places...
buying things and making them into gods or idols to be worshipped
blocking out what seems to be hard with alcohol or drugs
looking for predictions of hoped for better times through horoscopes, fortune tellers or others who bring false hopes.
Lord we pray for all who need such props to keep going and to bring what might be false hopes. Help us to know when and how to use our gifts and our trust in you, the only true hope, to help them draw close and come to know you. When we cannot give practical help, encourage us to life these people to you in prayer, knowing that you can and are willing to help.

As the magi who came to visit Jesus were placed in a dangerous situation, yet were guided by you, our God, to safety we pray today for those who are in danger of any kind:
children and adults who are abused
addicts who are dicing with danger
children, women and men having to live in dangerous sometimes war-torn areas
refugees pushed out from places of safety
all those who have gone to dangerous places to work for and to seek peace in places far from their homes
and others known personally to us
May each one find the help and protection that they need and may they know that you care, we care and that there is hope.

Meet each one of us at the point of each need, and allow your healing power to flow into each part of our lives.

Help us in the days to come to respond in trust to you alone and to place all that we are and can be into your hands.

This we ask in the name of Jesus, Light of the World, Prince of Peace, Redeemer and Saviour.
Amen
