Prayers for Advent

Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.
Open our eyes, Lord
• When they are half-shut, because we are tired of looking
• When they are half-open because we fear to see too much
• When they are bleary with tears because yesterday and today and tomorrow are filled with the same pain
• When they are contracted because we only look at what we want to see.
Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.

Open our eyes, Lord
• To gently scan the life we lead, the home we have and the world we inhabit
• To find among our ‘busyness’ and our blindness, the uncertainty or the sadness, signs of hope we can fasten to, nurture and multiply.

Lord, give us, whose eyes are dimmed by familiarity, a bigger vision of what you can do.
Show us the world as in your sight – though riddled by debt, deceit and disbelief – is brimming with possibilities for recovery, renewal and redemption.
Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.

We pray for those caught up in civil unrest, wars and conflicts around the world;
Egypt, Congo, Syria, Afghanistan
Soldiers, refugees, civilians and those who hold fast to the reasons for the fighting.
Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.

We pray for homeless people – excluded from what the rest of us are doing,
Cold and struggling to keep a hold of who they are.
Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.

We pray for those who are ill in body, mind and spirit,
Coping with pain, fearing the worst
And those in the medical and caring professions,
Providing comfort, relief and healing.

Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.

We pray for those people who are struggling in relationships,
Especially at this ‘family time’, when cracks are kept just below the surface,
When moods and situations are tense and fragile.

Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now.

And for the deepest hopes and fears of our own hearts, we pray in silence

Into the mess of this world a fragile child will come –
Yelling in the night for his mother,
Needing milk and clean linen…….
We pin our hopes on you little baby
Our Lord – pushed out into the world, through pain and into poverty
Our Lord is with us – and so our eyes are opened and our hope is re-born.
Jesus Christ, Lord of all
Come to us now
and accept our prayers today

AMEN
