Fareham URC Awarded Dementia Friendly Status

Fareham URC joins the Fareham Shopping Centre and other premises in being awarded and authorised to display the “Dementia Friendly Logo”. This recognises the training and work undertaken to offer a non-threatening, empowering welcome to those persons with Dementia seeking to be part of our church family and worship. In recognition of the achievement, Diane Bizley, local Area Coordinator presented the Hampshire Dementia Friendly Logo to us at the February Church Meeting.

As part of our church commitment to achieving and maintaining a Dementia Friendly environment, some church volunteers have come together to support the Fareham Alzheimer’s Support Group which has for several years met monthly at our church. After initially meeting together, the Alzheimer’s Support Group divides to provide two crucial services: informed, empathetic support and encouragement for the carers, and activities, music and song for the persons with Dementia.

Cliff Cropley in accepting a cheque from Ron Henderson to purchase a mini bowls set for the Group to enjoy, mentioned how much the Group valued meeting in our church premises and the support and readiness of members to accept the challenge of being “Dementia Aware” at all times. The February Church Meeting agreed to have a fund raising event to obtain other items on the Group’s “Wish List” of games to play, including memory games to enhance and exercise the brain.
